Indian power plant coal stocks top 45 mt as generation slides

Coal stocks at Indian power plants rose 7% in the latest week, topping 45 mt for the first time on record. The rise came on consistent coal supplies in tandem with generation falling sharply on tepid demand. Power intensive industries have almost completely stopped production under the 21-day national lockdown in response to COVID-19. The shutdown has not yet affected coal mining and rail transportation, but Coal India (CIL) may curtail output in the coming days to manage its inventories that have spiraled to 76 mt.
