Contura cuts Q2 inventories by 0.50 mst

United States coal producer Contura Energy managed to cut inventories during the second quarter by about 0.50 mst (short tons). Of that, 0.35 mst were on the metallurgical side, Contura executives said during the company’s recent earnings discussion. The company idled some of its operations for as long as four weeks during the quarter. Contura Chief Executive Oicer David Stetson said the pause not only allowed the company to begin work on how to lower its coal stockpiles, but to also analyze what the COVID-19 pandemic was doing to the US coal industry.
