Higher domestic coal availability hits Indian power plant imports

Thermal coal imports by Indian power plants fell 36% year on year in August as government owned plants sharply cut their intake on higher domestic availability amid a tapering of electricity demand. Imports in August were 3.34 mt, down from 5.25 mt in August 2019, according to Central Electricity Authority (CEA) data. The intake was down 15% from 3.92 mt in July, when imports rose as plants took delivery of material that was deferred in April-June.
