Indonesia lobbies China to boost coal imports

Indonesia is lobbying China to import more thermal coal this year with the COVID-19 pandemic having decimated global demand. Despite a sharp reduction in Indonesian output in January- August, the market remains oversupplied and international coal prices have weakened considerably over the year. Indonesian President Joko Widodo has urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to open its doors wider and import up to 100 mt of coal, said Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Panjaitan this week. Panjaitan did not give a timeframe for the 100 mt, but before the year-end is the believed target.
