Germany’s Steag to cut 1,000 jobs in shift away from coal

Power utility Steag GmbH said it will cut around 1,000 operational and administrative jobs at coal-fired power plant sites in Germany as it pushes ahead with refocusing its business in line with the country’s decarbonization goals. Since legislation putting an end to coal-fired power generation in Germany entered into force, Steag said that over the coming years, it will gradually have to shut down and decommission most of its hard coal-fired power plants in the country, with the exception of Walsum 10, which only went into operation in 2013.
