Chile’s Jan-July thermal coal imports up 17%

Chile’s thermal coal imports during the first seven months of 2020 totalled 6.90 mt, up 17% from 5.88 mt a year earlier, according to National Customs Service data. The country’s thermal imports in July were 1.30 mt, up from 1.04 mt in June and up from 0.98 mt in July 2019. Increased coal fired generation at the expense of reduced hydro availability is the main reason for the rise in imports this year compared with 2019.
