IFC contractor loses $62 milion lawsuit to subcontractor

A US jury awarded $62 million in damages to a Louisiana-based contractor hired to build Iowa Fertilizer Co.'s (IFC) plant at Wever, Iowa after assessing the plant's general contractor failed to pay for labour. The decision in the District Court for southern Iowa on October 12 came as court records showed Orascom E&C USA Inc. failed to honour a contract when it fired subcontractor Maintenance Enterprises LLC in October 2015; did not make several payments on time for subcontracting work prior to the firing; and denied the company access to the plant to retrieve its equipment and tools from the work space.
