As an active, but way-past-his-sell-by-date fanner, I marvel at the skill level young farmers now need to survive on a modem mixed farm. They need to be weathermen to judge when to sow and reap their crops, engineers to service and maintain their machinery, and computer programmers to set up their tractors, milking parlours or poultry houses. They need a degree in chemistry to identify and treat the weeds and diseases in their crops, plus an insight into animal diseases and nutrition so their stock is maintained in excellent health and welfare.
