Agriculture set to be star of the show once more

Last autumn, more than 40,000 people, many of them schoolchildren, experienced a unique taste of some of the exciting developments taking place in British farming.Visitors at New Scientist Live, the world's biggest science and technology fair, flocked to see an impressive array of hands-on exhibits pulled together by Farmers Weekly and 14 leading agricultural businesses and organisations under the banner "The Future of Farming".They learned, among other things, how speed breeding of new crop traits is accelerating improvements in disease resistance, how smart feeding can reduce the carbon footprint of cows, how microchips embedded in slugs are helping us understand pest behaviour and how precision farming technology is helping to protect crops and the environment.
