A New Mechanism for Upper Crustal Fluid Flow Driven by Solitary Porosity Waves in Rigid Reactive Media?

Abstract >The equations governing the interaction of viscous deformation with porous flow of fluids give rise to wave‐like solutions. Such solutions have been explored in the context of melt and fluid flow in the mantle and crust at high temperatures, where ductile behavior occurs. Now it has been shown that the coupling of the kinetics of chemical reactions with fluid flow may give rise to similar solutions. This opens intriguing new possibilities. Porosity waves may arise in low‐temperature regimes, and may become more accessible to observation, or they may remain mathematical curiosities because other modes of transport dominate in such settings. A number of possibilities, questions, and future courses of research have been opened up by Omlin et al.
