Italy commits to accelerated coal exit and ‘all of the above’ gas import strategy

Italy has set in stone its ambition to eliminate coal-fired power from the electricity mix by 2025, five years earlier than planned, and underscored its commitment to developing new gas and LNG import infrastructure. The country formally adopted its National Energy Strategy 2017 which envisages nine coal-fired plants totalling 8 GW of capacity coming offline by the middle of next decade.
