EC to draft procedures on chemical cocktails

The European Commission has pledged to address potential risks from the 'cocktail effect' of chemicals, although it is not planning any new legislation as yet. It says its priority is to focus resources on the chemical combinations that have the greatest potential for harm. Although EU laws set strict limits on the amounts of chemicals that are permitted in food, products, air and water, the possible toxicity of such chemicals in combination is rarely examined - a situation that is of concern to environmental organisations.
