UK carbon tax ‘must triple to achieve net-zero emissions’ - FoE

Environmental campaigners are calling on the UK government to introduce a new carbon tax and a “polluters must pay” principle to force fossil fuel businesses to fund the decarbonisation transition, claiming the industry has caused more than a trillion pounds in damage over the last three decades. Friends of the Earth (FoE) claim the social cost of carbon (SCC) emissions from the sector amounts to around GBP 1.65 trillion (USD 2.16 trillion) since 1990. In a report titled ‘Making the polluter pay’, the group calculates that fossil fuel extraction and use in the UK equates to at least GBP 44 billion every year based on an average SCC of GBP 120/tonne.
