QP says delayed Qatari gas project ‘due online this year’, unveils huge petchem plan

The delays plaguing a major gas project in Qatar seem to have been overcome after Qatar Petroleum’s (QP) CEO announced this week that the Barzan gas project is scheduled to start up by the end of 2019, with the statement coming as company signed a deal with Chevron Phillips to build the largest ethane cracker in the Middle East. The project - originally expected online in 2013 - looks set to finally fire up this year, QP’s CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi was quoted as saying this week. Work on the project by a joint venture between QP and ExxonMobil started in 2011, however progress has been marred by significant technical challenges.
