South Africa’s government has released a revised power plan out to 2030 showing coal is set to dominate the power mix, with plans to extend the life of an ageing nuclear facility in light of the government warning that there is an “immediate risk” of “huge power shortages”. The release of the plan comes amid sweeping blackouts in the country by debt-ridden public utility Eskom, which must be unbundled to have a chance of participating in developing new power capacity.
