NETHERLANDS: The Dutch Economic Affairs minister called for Groningen’s gas production to be cut faster than previously envisaged, after the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) reported that an earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale struck the Groningen town of Westerwijtwerd. The quake is the worst to hit Groningen since January 2018, when an earth tremor of the same magnitude struck. Earthquakes in Groningen have been linked to gas production, with the government forcing the field’s owners ExxonMobil and Shell to cap production due to the severity and frequency of earthquakes. The latest tremor was the seventh greater than 1.5 on the Richter scale to have struck Groningen this year.
