CPUC moves to penalise SoCalGas over ‘horrendous’ Aliso Canyon methane leak

California’s utility regulator has moved towards imposing a fine on Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) over the 2015 Aliso Canyon methane leak - the largest in US history - and is investigating whether SoCalGas and its owner Sempra Energy adequately prioritise safety. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) opened a formal investigation by ordering SoCalGas to explain “why it should not be sanctioned for allowing the uncontrolled release of natural gas at Aliso Canyon” between October 2015 and February 2016.
