US LNG boom ‘would hike emissions’, finds study that ignores coal-to-gas savings

New oil and gas infrastructure along the US Gulf and south-west could generate an additional 541 million tonnes of CO2e per annum by 2030, an amount equal to 131 coal-fired power plants or 8% of total US greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2017, according to new research from the University of Texas. The study raises a red flag against the emissions profile of planned US LNG and midstream projects, but does not consider potential emissions savings from US LNG enabling coal-to-gas switching in Europe and Asia.
