Yara teams up with Orsted for flagship green ammonia project in the Netherlands

Denmark’s world leading offshore wind developer Orsted is teaming up with Norwegian fertiliser giant Yara to develop a “ground-breaking” 100 MW wind-powered electrolyser at Yara’s Sluiskil production plant in the Netherlands. The project is aimed at replacing fossil fuel-based hydrogen with renewable hydrogen in ammonia production, with the electrolyser set to produce 75,000 ons of green ammonia annually to be used in carbon neutral fertiliser products and potentially as a fuel for the shipping sector. The proposed project will be powered by Orsted’s 752 MW capacity Borssele 1&2 offshore wind arm, the second biggest in the world, located off the coast of Zeeland close to Yara’s Sluiskil plant. The pair said they could take a final investment decision on the electrolyser in late 2021 or early 2022, provided they secure “the required public co-funding”.
