New CEO aligns Equinor with European rivals by pledging to hit ‘net zero’ by 2050

Equinor’s new CEO wasted little time stamping his mark on the company by announcing on his first day in the job that the Norwegian firm is targeting net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The move builds on Equinor’s climate pledges made earlier this year and brings it in line with fellow European IOCs Shell and BP, which have already announced 2050 net zero targets. The Norwegian firm did however add major caveats, stating its target is based on several assumptions, including the success of society’s emissions reduction efforts and the development of markets for carbon capture storage and hydrogen.
