EC puts hydrogen at heart of energy strategy, but costs not covered by Covid cash

The European Commission is placing “clean” hydrogen at the heart of both its short-term economic recovery and longer-term strategic planning, by funnelling Covid-19 funds into the sector and drawing up a dedicated strategy to propel zero-carbon sources of the fuel into the mainstream European energy mix. But the measures appear to fall short of recently leaked details [1] of the EC’s proposed H2 support, while the huge cost of subsidising a ramp-up in H2 production would eat up a significant chunk of the entire Covid-19 funding package, according to a new study.
