OGA tightens UK natural gas flaring regulations to help hit 2050 ‘net zero’ target

The UK Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) said today it plans to introduce new measures to limit flaring and venting of natural gas in the British oil and gas industry, with a view to halving total volumes flared by 2030, after new figures showed UK producers flared and vented 3% of the 1,560 Bcf of natural gas produced from the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) in 2019. In support of the UK government’s net-zero 2050 target, the OGA has initiated a new programme to improve the quality of available data and analysis, support the deployment of new technology and introduce stricter criteria and tougher measures under its extant licences to eliminate “unnecessary or wasteful” flaring in the UKCS.
