At Bite Beauty's Lip Lab in Soho, New York, shoppers clamour to make their own custom hues, lining up even before the store opens. The service is so popular, "most days we turn away approximately 40 percent of those who come," says Susanne Langmuir, founder of the Toronto-based cosmetics brand. "That tells us we have something special." After making her name in fragrance (her brand, Susanne Lang Parfumerie, retailed at Barneys and elsewhere), the entrepreneur veered into cosmetics with Bite in 2011. The concept: lip-only products made with food-grade ingredients and rich pigments—natural, yes, but high-performance. The line, also carried at Sephora, is such a hit that the company was acquired by Kendo (LVMH's product development arm) last fall.
