Secret world of BATS

We are at last unlocking many of the mysteries surrounding Britain's bats. Experts from the Bat Conservation Trust reveal 10 exciting areas of research. Bats are the most diverse group of mammals in Britain, with 18 recognised species making up a third of our mammal diversity - and this number is still growing. In 2010 the Alcathoe bat (pictured), thought to be a rare Mediterranean species, was discovered in Yorkshire by a team at Leeds University. Since then breeding colonies have been identified in other parts of the country. The Alcathoe bat has probably been under our noses all the time - we just weren't looking hard enough for this elusive species.
