Sinopec Chair Lands New Role Ahead of China’s Congress

Sinopec Group Chairman Wang Yupu has been appointed head of China’s safety watchdog in maneuvering ahead of next month’s Communist Party (CPC) congress, which is also expected to mark the start of President Xi Jinping’s second term in office. Beijing on Tuesday named Wang, 61, as head of China’s State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) where the two previous heads were fired for corruption. Wang has been chairman of state-run Sinopec since May 2015 after replacing the more flamboyant Fu Chengyu (IOD May 5’15).
