LNG importers in Northeast Asia received 19.2 million tons of the fuel in January, up 12% from a year ago, as gains in China and Taiwan offset marginal declines in Japan and South Korea. Chinese LNG imports jumped over 50% to 5.18 million tons in January, spurred by colder-than-expected weather and increased coal-to-gas switching mandated by the government to fight air pollution. January import volumes set a new monthly record for China, eclipsing the previous 5.03 million tons received in December (IOD Jan.31'18).
