Electric vehicles (EVs) will not significantly impact China’s oil demand until at least 2030 due to the high costs. Nor will they help China curb emissions as they will be fueled by coal-fired power generation, according to an ex-senior Beijing government official (IOD Sep.15’17). "Only if power generation is clean, it will be reasonable to have more [EVs] (for environmental protection),” Zhang Yuqing, ex-vice director of the state National Energy Administration (NEA), told an oil industry forum in Beijing.
