Can Murban Crude Become Mideast Benchmark?

Abu Dhabi hopes its Murban crude grade can become a new pricing benchmark for the Mideast region, pitting itself against the established Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) markers, and the Oman futures contract, which has never really caught on. It will be no easy matter to gain the market's support for a new benchmark, but a first step was taken late last year when ICE and Abu Dhabi announced plans to launch a futures contract based on the Murban crude produced by Abu Dhabi National Oil Co.
