Transneft Backs Organic Chloride Ban

Russia’s Transneft is backing an idea to ban the use of organic chlorides in oil production following the contamination of crude oil in its Druzhba export pipeline, the company’s deputy vice president in charge of crude quality, Igor Katsal, told an in-house magazine. The idea was previously proposed by the energy ministry after customers along the Druzhba pipeline in Europe were forced to halt offtake of contaminated crude because it could damage refineries (IOD May28’19). The incident, still being investigated, has caused “serious” economic and reputational damage to Russia, according to the Kremlin.
