Three weeks after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo proposed an international “coalition” to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, there’s little public evidence of the initiative gaining traction (IOD Jun.26’19). The slow progress comes despite tensions flaring when a UK warship intervened as the UK- flagged oil tanker British Heritage was confronted by three Iranian boats. That incident occurred a week after authorities in the UK territory of Gibraltar seized an Iranian vessel apparently bound for Syria (IOD Jul.12’19).
