PetroChina Hikes Sichuan Shale Output

PetroChina has tripled its shale gas output since 2016 in the Changning Block in China’s southwest Sichuan Basin to over 10 MMcm/d (353 MMcf/d), the company revealed on Wednesday. Under pressure from Chinese President Xi Jinping to raise domestic production to address the country’s rapid growth in gas imports and improve energy security, PetroChina and its state-run peers have invested more in shale gas development. Last year, China imported just over 45% of its gas needs.
