Refinery Shutdown Boosts Gasoline; Crude Up on Pipeline Issues

The shutdown of a refinery in the US Vir- gin Islands and the tightening of pipeline space transporting Canadian crudes to the US Midwest provided the only news Thurs- day in an otherwise quiet market. Nymex January gasoline contracts rose 3.59￠ to close at $2.3405 per gallon on Thursday. The gasoline contract also entered into backwardation - when the front- month contract is more expensive than later contracts - possibly indicating that the physical gasoline market is tightening.
