Gazprom Spuds Algeria Well

Russia's Gazprom is starting exploration drilling in Algeria under a contract signed last year. The state gas giant said Monday that upstream subsidiary Gazprom EP International has spudded the Rhourde Sayah-2 exploration well at El Assel in the Berkine Basin. The well is the first of four to be drilled according to the contract terms (IOD Dec.16'08,p1). Gazprom says it expects to complete the well in June, and the other three will be completed over the next two years. It is also carrying out 3-D seismic at El Assel. Gazprom holds a 49% stake in the project, while Algeria's state Sonatrach has the rest.
