With sweeping legislation set to materi- ally change the regulatory framework in the Gulf of Mexico, Apache’s move to dou- ble down in the region just days before the Macondo blowout seemed to be ill-timed at best. But the US independent is moving forward with its acquisition plans in the hope that the region’s prospectivity will ul- timately outweigh the higher costs that are looming on the horizon.
