The European Commission (EC) esti- mates that renewables will account for 64% of all new electricity generation capacity built in the European Union (EU) over the next ten years, compared with just 12% for coal and 7% for gas. Nuclear capacity will account for just 4% of new installed capacity, while oil-fired units will make up 3% of the total, according to the latest Energy Trends 2030 report from the exec- utive body of the 27-member organization.
