Graphical abstractSpeciation studies have been combined with synthetic and computational approaches to investigate on the stability of the Ni(II)-picolinic acid-selected amino acids systems.Display OmittedHighlights?Solution ternary complex formation was studied for the Ni(II)-HPic-amino acid system.?Ternary species are more stable than the binary analogues, except in the phe system.?Ternary Ni(pic)(L) complexes containing ser or phe were isolated and characterized.?Theoretical calculations were performed for the Ni(pic)(L) complexes.?Square pyramidal geometry is favored for Ni(pic)(L), according to the calculations.
