An in vitro experiment was conducted on Setaria italica, to study the effect of ethephon along with thermal stress (TS) on the activities of ammonia assimilation enzymes. Seedlings showed increased activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) GOT, nitrate reductase (NR), glutamine synthetase (GS) and proline content while decreased activity of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) GPT and protein content under thermal stress condition as compared to normal control grown seedling. Ethephon had significant effect on activity of aminotransferases (ALT, AST) and content of protein, proline in both the conditions. Whereas, lower and higher concentrations of ethephon decreased the proline content and ALT activity in thermal stress respectively, NR activity was reduced in thermal stress but was significantly increased under normal condition. Increased concentration of ethephon decreased the GS activity under both the conditions. The results suggested that the adverse effect of thermal stress might be relieved with ethephon by increased activity of aminotransferases (ALT, AST) and maintaining higher level of protein and proline.
