In the olden days of medicine case histories were considered essential in the conveyance of knowledge. Today they rather form a museum of curiosities, a pattern-card of phenomena not seldom combining an eventful clinical course and technical interference in its broadest sense. A case of eventration is put on the stage as an example of imaging ability. Irreversible technological advance makes it important to find the necessary balance between human needs and diagnostic potential. Imaging, how sophisticated it may be, should always be part of the big picture when it comes to decision making and follow up. Reappraisal of the chest X-ray, one of the icons of medicine is warranted.
