Mercedes is trimming its portfolio in the U.S., which has ballooned to more than 100 models, including engine variants and body styles. The automaker plans to discontinue seven car models, Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Nicholas Speeks told dealers in late June, without identifying them. But according to a source familiar with the plans, there could be more. Those under consideration are the coupe and convertible versions of the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class nameplates, as well as the CLS coupe and one of the brand's GT models, the source said. Mercedes has been backing away from cars in the U.S. for some time. Last year, car models accounted for 39 percent of its sales, down from 55 percent in 2015. But while Mercedes is reducing its line in one area, it's bulking up elsewhere. The automaker will introduce its EQ subbrand of electric vehicles stateside next year, launching several battery-powered vehicles.
