Naphtha-based producers on high end of global ethylene cost curve - Dow CEO

NEW YORK (ICIS)--Naphtha-based ethylene producers are the marginal ones on the high end of the cost curve amid the crude oil price rebound and constraints in moving co-products, the CEO of Dow said on Thursday. “I still think naphtha producers are the marginal ones - the ones in the fourth quartile. They could be in Asia and Europe… Europe has the added pressure of demand not coming back as strong as North America or China has,” said Jim fitterling, CEO of Dow, on a virtual fireside chat hosted by Bernstein analyst Jonas Oxgaard. The CEO estimates there are about 21m tonnes/year of ethylene capacity in the world that is considered marginal (high cost) versus 4m tonnes/year back during the financial crisis of 2008-2009. Of that 4m tonnes/year, around 2m tonnes were idled and 2m tonnes shut down, he said.
