The continuing battle between Gazprom and the ExxonMobil-led Sakhalin 1 consortium for LNG dominance in Russia’s far east took centre stage at a Sakhalin oil and gas conference this week. Gazprom claims to be pressing ahead with development plans for the 711bn m~3 South Kirinsky feld offshore Sakhalin island, despite US sanctions targeting the feld. South Kirinsky is a potential source of gas for the planned 5.4mn t/yr third LNG train at the Gazprom-led 9.6mn t/yr Sakhalin 2 plant. And the Exxon- Mobil-led Sakhalin 1 consortium is still eyeing independent LNG exports, although Gazprom has been trying to secure Sakhalin 1 gas for its planned third train for a decade. The Sakhalin 1 shareholders include Rosneft, which has repeatedly challenged Gazprom’s domination of Russian gas exports.
