Venezuela has stopped delivering mostly light sweet crude to its close ally Cuba, forcing the island to look for alternatives. Venezuelan state-owned PdV’s crude and products shipments to Cuba have fallen to a contractual minimum of 53,000 b/d this year, down from closer to 80,000 b/d last year. Light crude shipments account for a “very significant part” of the reduction, an energy ministry official says. PdV is still sending some light crude to Cuba, the official says, but without specifying the current supply mix. The company has tried to offset the reduction in light crude supply by increasing exports of diesel, fuel oil and LPG to the country. But the 33pc drop in Venezuelan oil imports has forced Cuba to look elsewhere to fill the shortfall.
