Global demand growth will slow sharply in the next fve years compared with the previous decade as transport fuel consumption stagnates, an IEA report says. Global oil demand grows by 950,000 b/d a year in 2019-25, compared with 1.5mn b/d a year in the previous 10 years, the IEA’s medium-term Oil 2020 report says. Engine efciency improvements and electric vehicles’ growing market share are the main reasons. “A common feature impacting all segments of the oil mar- ket is the acceleration of the energy transition in recent years,” the report says. Demand falls this year for the frst time since 2009, as the coronavirus outbreak hits travel and broader economic activity, the IEA says.
