China prices steady amid mixed influences

China’s domestic coal prices kept mostly steady this week, as stronger consumption helped offset the impact of persistently high stocks on market sentiment. Argus assessed domestic spot NAR 5,500 kcal/kg coal at Yn631.83/t fob Qinhuangdao, down by a slight Yn0.50/t from last week. In dollar terms, the price dropped by 17￠/t over the week to $90.76/t. Trades of domestic material were scarce in the spot market. But some traders were holding offers of 5,500kcal/ kg coal as high as Yn640/t fob northern China ports, in the expectation that higher coal burn for heating use will soon support demand.
