Australia: Thermal coal trade estimates lowered

Global thermal coal trade has been lowered for each calendar year to 2020 because of a decline in imports from China and other developed countries, which is offsetting import growth demand from emerging economies in Asia, the Australian government’s commodity forecaster said in a report. World trade in thermal coal is estimated to total 1.099bn t in calendar 2018 from the previous estimate of 1.1bn t, but up on the 1.088bn traded last year, the Office of the Chief Economist said in its Resources and Energy Quarterly (REQ) December 2018 report. The previous estimates were made in the REQ September 2018 report.
