Russian railcar squeeze boosts lease rates

A shortage of Russian open-top railcars for coal delivery has continued to lift spot lease rates in November. Lease rates for open-top railcars increased by 9pc or 150 roubles/d ($2.50/d) from October to Rbs1,700-2,000/d this month, excluding value-added tax (VAT). Rates surged by 19pc on the month in October. The rise is underpinned by a railcar shortage at a time of increased winter coal demand.
