State-controlled Coal India (CIL), the country's largest coal producer, has received environmental clearances for its 17 coal mining projects that may bring an additional output of 150mn t/yr by 2025. The utility has struggled to grow output in the April 2019-March 2020 fiscal year, but these projects are expected to help it achieve 1bn t/yr in output by 2023-24. Coal minister Pralhad Joshi said on 27 January that these clearances have been granted by the ministry of environment and forests, and will help in realising the government’s goal of making power available to all. CIL also received approvals for three new washeries with a total capacity of 25mn t/yr.
