Philippines' January imports rise but outlook weak

The Philippines’ thermal coal imports increased on the yearin January as the start-up of an additional 1.3GW of coalcapacity in 2019 offset a partial operational disruption atsome coal plants, caused by the eruption of the Taal volcano.Thermal coal imports — including lignite — increased by588,000t on the year to 2.4mn t, according to customs data.This was a record high for January, although 57,000t loweron the month. The import mix was dominated by Indonesiancoal — only 300t of thermal coal was received from China.
