The Australian thermal coal market lacked clear price direction this week ahead of a week-long holiday in China and slow interest from Japan. The NAR 5,500 kcal/kg market, which sells mainly to China, rose by 48¢ to $48.55/t fob Newcastle. Some market participants took advantage of the last week before the start of the Chinese holiday to seal a few more deals. Several October-loading Panamax and Capesize cargoes of NAR 5,500 kcal/kg coal traded in a $48.50-49.50/t fob Newcastle range. Another cargo loading out of Gladstone in Queensland was also sold in that price range, although Queensland ports are not included in the Argus index.
