Gdansk port expansion to ease coal bottlenecks

The Polish port of Gdansk plans to double rail loading capacity by early-2020 to ease coal import bottlenecks. Operator Port Polnocny is preparing to build a second rail loading facility, a company executive said. The expansion, which should be complete by early 2020, will allow the port to double the number of coal trains it dispatches to 18 a day. Bottlenecks have restricted Gdansk coal throughputs. The port handled almost 7.2mn t of coal last year — roughly half thermal and half coking — up by 40pc on 2017. Almost all of this was imports, with only small volumes of thermal coal re-exported to Scandinavia.
